Description

Bionix® SafeStraw allows healthcare providers to safely manage swallowed liquid volume and help reduce aspiration occurrence in patients with oral motor dysfunction.

Problem: Patients with oral motor dysfunction have difficulty controlling a liquid bolus and often swallow prematurely causing them to aspirate.

Solution: SafeStraw limits volume to approximately a teaspoon, or 6.2 ml’s, per sip helping to reduce the likelihood of aspiration by promoting a controllable liquid bolus.

Results: Limited bolus size helps reduce aspiration risks allowing patients to safely, discreetly, and independently drink from a variety of containers such as cups and bottles.

Preparation Step

To Assemble:
1. Use one of the provided 1⁄4” diameter flexi-straws, or one of your own. If straw is too long, simply cut to desired length.
2. Press straw firmly on to the tapered end of the SafeStraw cylinder. The wide end of the cylinder is the bottom.
3. Place in drink and fill the cylinder by sucking once. Suck again to begin to use.
NOTE: Between sips, the float inside of the cylinder needs to reset, or fall to the bottom of the cylinder, to allow for full volume consumption on the next sip. Sink time of the float will vary depending on the thickness of the liquid (approximately 1-3 seconds for thin and 6-9 seconds for nectar thickened).
4. Disassemble after use and clean to above instructions.

To Clean:
Wash and inspect the Cylinder, float and valve before use. Unit can be washed in hot water and soap, or the top rack of a non-industrial dishwasher.

To Disassemble:
To disassemble for cleaning, remove the valve and float from the bottom of the cylinder.

Warnings/Cautions:
Inspect before use. Discard and replace at first sign of damage. Designed for use with thin, water like liquids. Do not use with carbonated beverages, pulpy or honey thickened liquids. To prevent burns, do not microwave or use with hot liquids. Age restriction: Not for use by children less than 6 years old unless directed by physician. Warning: Choking hazard, contains small parts.
